You’re listening to the World News from the BBC.
The US Senate has passed legislation that would allow the United States to supply India with civilian nuclear technology and fuel. The vote followed months of sensitive negotiations with the White House, which first struck the cooperation deal with India. Under the agreement, India would open up some of its nuclear facilities to international inspection in return for American technological support.
Shahzeb Jillani reports from Washington.
Supporters of the deal have called it a historic step towards strategic partnership between the two great democracies of the world. For critics, however, the deal is a mistake and a major setback for global nuclear non-proliferation efforts. With crisis of Iran and North Korea’s nuclear programs still unresolved, Critics believe America should not be rewarding India for having secretly developed a nuclear weapons program and refusing to sign the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty. But in the end, months of relentless lobbying and strong bipartisan support the deal has enjoyed in Washington seems to have gone a long way in winning support for the United States involving strategic relationship with India.
