The British Prime Minister Tony Blair has said that there is an urgent need to combat what he called the poisonous propaganda Islamic extremists who radicalize young British Muslims. He was speaking after the head of British Domestic Intelligence Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller said more than 1600 British Muslims were suspected of plotting to carry out attacks in Britain or overseas. Mr. Blair said he agreed with her assessment.
“This is a threat that’s growing up over a generation. I think she’s absolutely right in saying that it will last a generation and it can only be combated in the end not just by proper measures on security and we are looking again that how we strengthen our terrorism laws, something I have been saying for a long time we need to make sure that that’s the case. But in addition to that, that we take on and combat, the poisonous propaganda of those people, the warp and pervert minds, particularly of younger people.”
