North Korea says the decision on whether it will carry out further nuclear tests will depend on how the country is treated by the United States. The country's position was expressed by a senior official Kim Yong-nam. Mr. Kim’s remark is the first high-level North Korean comments since the crisis erupted after North Korea reported the test explosion on Monday.
The American Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has warned that North Korea risks souring sanctions imposed that would be unlike any it had experienced before. Charles Scanlon reports from Seoul.
Kim Yong-nam is North Korea's nominal head of state, second in the country's hierarchy to the supreme ruler Kim jong il. He was quoted by the Japanese news agency Kyodo with threatening more nuclear tests. He said everything would depend on the attitude of the United Sates, which was accused of pursuing a hostile policy towards his country. Mr. Kim said that the North would not return to talks until the US dropped financial sanctions. The threat will be taken seriously. Analysts say North Korea may need to conduct several more tests to build a credible nuclear deterrent.
